103 Kazakh students to compete in 2025 Winter University Games in Torino

From January 13 to 23, Italy’s Torino will host the XXXII Winter University Games, Kazinform News Agency reports.

According to the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, as many as 2,000 athletes from 57 countries will compete for 90 sets of medals in 11 sports.

Kazakhstan will be represented at the event by 103 athletes who will compete in 10 sports: biathlon, cross-country skiing, freestyle, figure skating, hockey (men, women), para cross-country skiing, Alpine skiing, and short-track.

The opening ceremony is scheduled for January 13, 07:30 pm at Inalpi Arena, and closing ceremony will be held on January 23, 2025, at 08:00 pm.

The competitions will take place from January 11 to 23 according to the FISU schedule.

The goal of the Universiade is to attract youth to sports, to popularize healthy life style, and to develop mass sport. 

It should be reminded that Kazakh athletes clinched 36 medals, including 11 gold, eight silver and 17 bronze earning the second spot in the overall medal tally at the 2017 Winter University Games in Almaty. 

At the 2023 FISU World Winter University Games in Lake Placid (U.S.), Team Kazakhstan captured 11 medals - three gold, four silver and four bronze - in 5 sports ranking 11th in the overall medal tally. Kazakh athletes competed in 10 sports:  biathlon, ice hockey (men), short-track, figure skating, cross-country skiing, Nordic combined, ski jumping, skating,  snowboard, and Alpine skiing.
