150-year-old saddle of Kazakh great poet Abai stored at Kokpar Club in Almaty
The 150-year-old saddle that was used by Kazakh great poet and philosopher Abai at the time is in storage at the Kokpar Club Daukei in Almaty city, Kazinform News Agency reports.
The ancient relic was passed down through generations.
According to Nurbolat Boribek, head of the Republican Kokpar 3×3 Federation, a saddle is among the most valuable and common household items in everyday life of Kazakhs. ‘Our ancestors used to determine the tribe and region the guest came from as well as his status just by looking at his horse and outfit,’ he adds.
There were saddles bearing the names of tribes they were made by, including Argyn eri (saddle belonging to Argyn tribe) or Naiman eri (Naiman tribe saddle). According to ethnographers, the saddle belonged to the Middle zhuz… This historic relic was handed over to Daniyar Daukei by astronaut Toktar Aubakirov, who is kin to Abai, says Boribek.
He went on to note that the saddle known as the Naiman saddle is around 150-year-old. The wooden saddle has silver decorations on it. The saddle is small in size, meaning that Abai used it in his youth.
It’s worth noting that the Zhidebai-Borili Historical, Cultural and Literary Memorial Museum-Reserve holds saddles belonging to Abai and his family members.
Earlier it was reported that the bust of great Kazakh poet and philosopher Abai was unveiled in a grand ceremony in the capital of Tatarstan, Kazan.
