17-year-old Indian grandmaster wins Pavlodar Open 2023 intl chess tournament
Indian grandmaster Aditya Mittal became a winner of PAVLODAR OPEN 2023 international chess tournament which concluded on October 31. The event brought together professional chess players from more than 20 countries of the world. Three Kazakhstanis, including Alisher Suleimenov who earlier beat Norwegian grandmaster, world’s no 1 rated player Magnus Carlsen, are in top 10 of the tournament standings, Kazinform News Agency reports.
The cash prize of the tournament is 23 million tenge.
According to Vice President of the Kazakhstan Chess Federation Alexander Babenko, the tournament was held for the 23rd time and gathered 230 participants – 84 foreign players, 63 international grandmasters from 21 countries and five continents.
He reminded that only 49 participants, of which 48 were Kazakhstanis and one Russian citizen competed in the first tournament.
The Swiss-system tournament was held in nine rounds.
Young Kazakhstanis got a unique chance to play vs grandmasters from various countries.
17-year-old Indian chess player Aditya Mittal became the champion of the tournament.
Three Kazakh players rank in top 10 of the tournament standing. They are Denis Makhnev who stands 6th, Alisher Suleimenov who is 9th and Zhandos Agmanov, who ranks 10th.
