23 years since the Day of approval of the Declaration on Kazakhstan sovereignty
It announced Kazakhstan as a sovereign state with all the attributes, rights and obligations of an independent country, including those of international policy. The Declaration became the base for development of the Constitution of independent Kazakhstan. In spite of the fact that since 2009 it hasn’t been celebrated as a state holiday, it is still an important day for people of Kazakhstan and a significant milestone in the calendar of political events of the country. According to the director if the State history Institute, professor, famous historian Burkitbay Ayagan, approval of this document marked the clear readiness of Kazakhstan to create a free state having nothing to do with totalitarian heritage.
“Approval of the Declaration on state sovereignty became a great event in the history of Kazakh people. Kazakhstani citizens got an opportunity to express their will. The Declaration marked denial from totalitarian heritage. The population wished for changes, something new, economic freedom. They literally suffered for this freedom, for the system of the USSR mostly consisted of prohibitions. The most important is that in the Declaration Kazakhstan expressed its readiness to create a free state, and Kazakhstan is this free state at the moment”, - considers B.Ayagan.
Let us recall that in March 2009 amendments were introduced in the legislation cancelling celebration of the Republic Day.
