ASTANA. August 5. KAZINFORM - About 400 tons of substandard food products have been destroyed in Kazakhstan in the first half of 2013, Chairman of the Committee of State Sanitary and Epidemiological Surveillance of the Ministry of Health of Kazakhstan Zhandarbek Bekshin told a briefing of the Central Communications Service under the President of Kazakhstan.

"In the course of monitoring in the first six months of this year 400 tons of food products have been withdrawn from the market and destroyed. Basically it is the food that did not meet the health standards for microbiological indicators, had no documents confirming the quality," chief sanitary officer of the country said.

However, he stressed that sanitation and epidemiological services of the country had all the necessary infrastructure and equipment for the determination of food quality, finding counterfeit products.

"The situation is complicated by the import of counterfeit meat and dairy products to the domestic market of Kazakhstan. Fillers or substitutes are generally added to food products. In this direction we have to work from next year," he added.

The system of sanitary and epidemiological surveillance employs more than 4,500 state employees, about 10,000 professionals of research centers, laboratories and anti-plague and disinfection services. About 100 units of modern laboratory equipment allow to detect GMOs and to conduct radiation sterilization of food products.
