484-year-old chestnut crowned UK Tree of the Year 2023
A giant sweet chestnut, thought to be almost 500-year-old, in Wrexham's Acton Park in Wales was named the winner of the UK Tree of the Year 2023 competition, Kazinform News Agency reports.
The giant tree became a symbol of resilience in the city, having experienced dozens of hurricanes and hard times after World War II when locals cut down the trees for firewood. The tree is loved and admired by local people for its beauty and history. It has already become a centrepiece for picnics and tree parties, according to Woodland Trust, UK’s largest woodland conservation charity, the organizer of the British competition of trees.
The height of the chestnut is 24 meters, and it measures slightly more than six meters around. The tree will represent Great Britain at the European Tree of the Year 2024 competition.
Historians say the city of Wrexham was founded in X century as a Roman settlement and was a coal mining and metal producing center in Great Britain for a long period of time.
