8 climbers die in stormy weather in Japan's Northern Alps
NAGANO. May 6. KAZINFORM A total of eight mountaineers died Saturday in three locations in the Northern Alps in central Japan in bad weather, police said.
Among the eight were a group of six men aged between 63 and 78, including four doctors. They were found collapsed near 2,932-meter Mt. Shiroumadake in Nagano Prefecture by another climber at 8 a.m. Saturday and later confirmed dead due to hypothermia, Kyodo reports.
The incident is the worst in terms of number of victims in a party since eight mountaineers in a group died due to cold weather on 2,141-meter Mt. Tomuraushi in Japan's northernmost prefecture of Hokkaido in July 2009.
