80 cases of meningitis registered in Astana
ASTANA. KAZINFORM - 80 cases of meningitis have been registered in Kazakhstan's capital Astana over the past six months, according to top sanitary official of Kazakhstan Zhandarbek Bekshin.
As Kazinform was told by Bekhshin, 49 cases of meningitis were also confirmed in the Karaganda region. Bekshin said most cases of meningitis in Astana were registered in June-July 2014. In total, meningitis was found in 264 citizens of Kazakhstan this year. Meningitis cases occurred in the Akmola, East Kazakshtan, Mangystau, Pavlodar, North Kazakhstan and Karaganda regions as well as in the cities of Astana and Almaty. Meningitis is an acute inflammation of the protective membranes covering the brain and spinal cord, known collectively as the meninges.
