Afghan intelligence chief survives assassination

"The initial reports said the head of the National Directorate of Security (NDS) or intelligence agency Assadullah Khalid was wounded in a suicide bombing inside a NDS compound in Taimani neighbourhood Thursday afternoon," the security official told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.
No more details about the incident were available, Xinhua reported.
A source with the Kabul police confirmed to Xinhua the failed assassination attempt, saying that "the attack is under investigation and the NDS chief was receiving medical treatment in a NDS hospital in Kabul."
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far.
The Taliban insurgent group, which has been waging an insurgency of more than one decade, launched in May this year an annual rebel offensive against Afghan security forces and about 100,000 NATO forces stationed in the country.
The insurgent group has warned the civilians to stay away from official gatherings, military convoys and centers regarded as the legitimate targets by the militants besides warning people against supporting government and foreign troops.
