Carrying 181 persons, the Jeju Air jet swerved off the runway and attempted a crash landing at Muan International Airport on Sunday morning. The plane ran into a fence, causing major damage and igniting on fire that was later extinguished.

"Jeju Air will spare no effort to respond to the accident," the airline said in a statement. “We are currently working to determine the exact cause and details of the situation," a company official added, noting that the aircraft had been in operation for 15 years with no history of accidents.

Authorities have confirmed the deaths of 85 people, however the death toll continues to rise. Rescue efforts continue, with 2 people having been saved. The flight was carrying mostly South Korean passengers, along with 2 Thai nationals.

As reported earlier, the crash occurred after a malfunction in the landing gear, likely caused by a bird strike. The plane failed to reduce speed and collided with airport structures, leading to the fatal crash. Investigations and rescue efforts are ongoing as authorities work to determine the exact cause of the tragedy.
