Almaty mayor condoles with families of hostel fire victims

Mayor of Almaty Yerbolat Dossayev arrived at the scene of the fire which occurred in a hostel located on Sharipov Street. He surveyed the gutted building and heard a preliminary report on the fire cause, Kazinform News Agency reports.

According to him, the mayor’s office launched all required measures to help those injured and evacuated. The akimat of the district has already provided the evacuated residents  with temporary accommodation and meals, while local healthcare authorities provide medical and psychological assistance to them.

The mayor expressed his condolences to the bereaved families and relatives.

The hostel occupied the basement level of a 3-storey building on Sharipov Street. 

This fundamentally violates the law. The basement is not suitable for living, no matter how it is equipped, said chief of the municipal emergencies department Nurlan Atygayev.

13 people were killed in the hostel fire.
