Almaty received IMO flag

ALMATY.  October 21. KAZINFORM  /Aigul Turysbekova/ A ceremony of passing the flag of the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) took place at the Al-Farabi Kazakh National University in Almaty today.

"Holding the 51st International Mathematical Olympiad in Kazakhstan sets the best pattern of the achievements of our scientists and our students' successful performances in international contests", vice-principal of the University, professor Nurzhan Temirbekov noted.

The International Mathematical Olympiad is the annual world competition in mathematics among the senior school students. The first IMO was held in 1959. Kazakhstan participated in the IMO for the first time in 1992 as an observer country. Since 1993 it has been the full member of the IMO. "Over these years our school students have won 62 medals - 8 gold, 17 silver and 37 bronze ones. This year our team has won 1 silver and 3 bronze medals", N. Temirbekov said.

Kazakhstan will be the first CIS country to hold such intellectual event which is scheduled for July 3-15, 2010 in Astana. 110 countries are expected to take part in it.

Kazakhstan's weight on the international arena, economic growth and political stability attract attention of the global intellectual community.  Besides, high level of mathematical base of the country  represented by educational centers, universities, allows Kazakhstan organizing such global scale contests, experts of Daryn National Scientific Center consider.
