MOSCOW. July 29. KAZINFORM Ukrainian striker Andriy Shevchenko has retired from football to pursue a career in politics, his club Dynamo Kiev has said.

Shevchenko played for AC Milan and Chelsea during an illustrious 18-year career that included a Champions League win in 2003 with Milan.

Politics is his next destination, he said, but decline to say what direction that would take.

“It will be connected with politics. I hope for your support,” he said late Friday. “Soon everyone will know everything.”

Shevchenko, 35, captained co-hosts Ukraine at Euro 2012 and is the country’s top scorer with 48 goals and second most capped player with 111 caps.

Shevchenko is the third-highest goalscorer in Champions League history with 58 goals.

His career started and ended at Dynamo, for whom he made 172 appearances and scored 83 goals.
