Sargsyan expressed the wish on Monday at a regular session of the Security Council of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), held in Sochi, Russia.

Sargsyan hoped that four CSTO members countries - Russia, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, which are also SCO members - would back Armenia's bid.

Earlier this month, Sargsyan announced Armenia's decision to join the Russia-led Customs Union. Armenia's readiness to become an observer state in the SCO could open up new possibilities for the country's economic development, and deepen its relations with East Asian countries, Armenpress said.

Leaders of the CSTO member countries met in Sochi to discuss issues related to the expansion of allied cooperation and the improvement of the collective security system, Xinhua reports.

The CSTO is an intergovernmental military alliance. It currently consists of Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia and Tajikistan.
