Azerbaijani Airlines plane crash: Identifying people by their faces was impossible, says criminologist from Aktau

Aibek Alibayev, criminologist in the Operational Forensics Department of the Mangistau Regional Police Department, was part of the team engaged in identifying the bodies of those killed in the Azerbaijani Airlines plane crash near Aktau, Kazinform News Agency correspondent reports.

Family members of 37 victims from different countries arrived; the work was conducted to identifies to bodies. It was impossible to identify through their facial features, forcing us to look for special signs such as moles, scars and tattoos. It was very tough for relatives. Those felt bad during the identification process received medical assistance, said Alibayev.

Alibayev was presented with the Aibyn Order of 2nd degree named after Baurzhan Momyshuly by the presidential decree.

Today, 68 people including locals, health workers, firefighters and rescuers were given letters of appreciation and state awards.

Among the awardees is Elmira Akibayeva, a resident of Atash village, Tupkaraganskiy district, who received a letter of appreciation from the President.

Following the plane crash, Akibayeva, who was on a bus with her colleagues, directed it to the accident site, and was among the first to arrive at the accident site. Before the arrival of ambulances, she boarded those injured on the bus and offered them first aid.

We helped the stewardess and flight attendant; boarded people on the bus. There was a wounded girl at the age of around 8-10, crying 'Let me go, my mother is inside, save my mother'. I calmed her, saying that her mother is alive and provided the child with psychological assistance, recalls Akibayeva.

Earlier it was reported that residents of Mangistau region received top honors for their efforts following the plane crash near Aktau. 

Earlier, Kazinform reported that the specialists from the Aeronautical Accidents Investigation and Prevention Center (Cenipa) of the Brazilian Air Force began analyzing data from the black boxes of Azerbaijan Airlines’s Embraer 190 plane.

On December 30, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) called for a thorough, impartial and transparent investigation into the tragic crash of Azerbaijan Airlines flight 8243 on 25 December 2024.

The Azerbaijan Airlines plane which was flying from Baku to Grozny crashed near Aktau, Mangistau region, on December 25. The plane was carrying 67 people including 5 crew members. 38 people died and 29 survived as a result of the tragedy. Among the victims are six nationals of Kazakhstan.
