CA countries to supply over 11 cubic kilometers of water to Kazakhstan
More than 11 cubic kilometers of water will be supplied to Kazakhstan’s Turkistan and Kyzylorda regions until April 1, 2024. Such an agreement was reached at the 85th meeting of the Interstate Coordination Water Commission (ICWC) held in Tashkent, Kazinform News Agency reports.
During the meeting, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan signed a protocol on the projected operating mode of the chain of water reservoirs in Syrdarya and Amudarya river basins, and also approved water intake limits for 2023–2024 growing season.
The 86th meeting of the ICWC will be held in Kazakhstan early next year.
As per the protocol, 11.1 cubic kilometers of water will be supplied to Shardara reservoir, while the expected water intake through the Dostyk interstate canal will be 487 million cubic meters. This will enable to accumulate the required volume of water for non-growing season in 2024 in Turkistan and Kyzylorda regions, as well as supplying 1.6 billion cubic meters of water to replenish the Aral Sea.
The meeting of the Interstate Coordination Water Commission was fruitful. We managed to quickly resolve issues of importance for the entire region. For example, we agreed on the volumes of water intake from Syrdarya and Amudarya rivers. Only through joint efforts will we be able to ensure rational use and saving of water resources in Central Asia, says Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation of Nurzhan Nurzhigitov.
