Cargo transshipment at Kuryk Port to reach 2.2mln tons by yearend
As part of his working trip to Mangystau region, Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov got familiarized himself with the region’s transport-logistics and tourist potential, Kazinform News Agency reports.
During his visit to the Kuryk Port, the prime minister was reported that since the year beginning cargo transshipment here had exceeded 1.5 million tons. By the end of the year, this figure is set to be raised 2.2 million tons. Bottom dredging operations in the port will be completed this year, and a grain terminal will be launched. A logistics cluster is being established and the ferry fleet is being modernized. In general, the port's promising design capacity is 6 million tons of cargo per year. The port which operates on a year-round basis is capable of receiving automobile and railway ferries at its four specialized berths.
Olzhas Bektenov was informed about the Kazakh-German investment project for the production of "green hydrogen" used in energy, oil refining, chemical industry, etc. The capacity of the enterprise is projected at 2 million tons of products. The amount of investment is more than €50 billion. The project also provides for construction and operation of a desalination plant and a 40 GW renewable energy station. As many as 1,800 jobs will be created with the project's implementation.
The head of the Kazakh Government got acquainted with the capacities of the Aktau Sea Trade Port. The facility plays a key role in the development of the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route. In terms of its technical parameters and business processes created, the port meets modern international standards. Its technical equipment allows handling a wide range of cargo. Today, throughput capacity of the port exceeds 11 million tons. There are three oil loading and three dry cargo berths, a grain terminal with the annual capacity of 800,000 tons of agricultural products, as well as a ferry complex. From January to August 2024, cargo transshipment through the port augmented three million tons. The main directions are Iran, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Russia, etc.
The prime minister was also reported about the plans to build a container hub in the Aktau port. China’s Lianyungang Port Group of Companies LLC, was attracted as an investor for the project, which is expected to facilitate medium-term and long-term planning of transportation and create favorable conditions for cargo delivery.
The Prime Minister noted strategic importance of Mangystau region, located at the intersection of international transport corridors.
“The Head of State set a strategic task for the Government - to transform our ports, turning them into one of the leading hubs of the Caspian Sea. The geographical location of Kazakhstan is our advantage, which we must use to the fullest. Mangystau region has enormous transit, logistics and infrastructure-service potential, which should be developed further. The implementation of new projects is important for expanding domestic maritime transport and logistics cluster,” Olzhas Bektenov emphasized.
