China voices readiness to assist Kazakhstan in NPP construction

On December 10-13, 2024, the Kazakhstani delegation led by Minister of Energy Almassadam Satkaliyev paid a working visit to the People’s Republic of China, Kazinform News Agency has learnt from the Kazakh Energy Ministry.

In the Chinese capital of Beijing, energy minister Satkaliyev met with head of China’s National Energy Administration Wang Hongzhi and Vice Chairman of China Atomic Energy Authority Liu Jing.

The sides discussed cooperation issues in the field of nuclear energy, oil and gas, electric power industry and renewable energy. Moreover, the Chinese side expressed a high degree of support for Kazakhstan in implementation of the project on construction of a nuclear power plant, reads a statement of the ministry.

Satkaliyev also engaged in talks with Shen Yanfeng, president of the China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC), shortlisted as a possible supplier of nuclear technology to Kazakhstan.

The Kazakhstani delegation visited the Zhangzhou Nuclear Power Plant with an HPR-1000, that is under construction, Shanghai Electric production facilities as well as a uranium conversion and enrichment plant in central China in pursuit of the ongoing work of the Kazakh ministry to create high-value clusters, including uranium conversion and enrichment, under the Head of State’s state-of-the-nation address.

Earlier, France and Russia expressed their readiness to lend assistance to Kazakhstan in the NPP construction.

To note, 71.12% of Kazakhstani residents supported the construction of the country’s first-ever nuclear power plant following the national referendum on October 6, 2024.
