China’s FM Wang Yi meets with SCO Secretary General Nurlan Yermekbayev

Minister of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China Wang Yi held a meeting on Friday with Nurlan Yermekbayev, who will take office as SCO Secretary General starting from January 1, 2025, Kazinform News Agency reports.

The meeting was also joined by outgoing Secretary-General of the SCO Zhang Ming.

Wang Yi extended his congratulations to Nurlan Yermekbayev on his appointment and noted that China will continue its support and contribution to the work of the SCO Secretariat.

China has assumed the rotating presidency of the SCO. And we plan to hold over 100 events in China and the member countries. We’re confident in the SCO’s potential and ready for cooperation with the member countries to advance the development of the Organization at a new level, said the Chinese foreign minister.

In turn, Yermekbayev commended the leading role China plays in the development of the SCO and shared his vision of the role of the Organization nowadays.

During the meeting, the sides exchanged views on the preparations for the events due to take place under China’s presidency of the SCO.

To note, at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in Astana, the member states elected Kazakhstan's Nurlan Yermekbayev as new Secretary General of the organization for 2025-2027.

Established in 2001, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization includes 10 member countries, two observer states and 14 dialogue partners.
