CIS railways urged to step up efforts to raise passenger numbers
It is essential to work out an algorithm of activities to raise the number of passengers and to arrange profitable business, the head of the Belarusian Railways said.
He emphasized that in 2014 the number of passenger travelling across the broad gauge territory fell by 40% as against 2013. "This figures regarding the number of passengers travelling between states show that railway companies have lost the initiative, and passengers tend to use other means of transport," Vladimir Morozov said.
The head of the Belarusian Railways expressed confidence that the representatives of railway administrations will be able to find a harmonized decision, first of all, regarding tariff formation, which will help develop the international passenger service.
According to Vladimir Morozov, the current meeting in Minsk is a good opportunity to continue professional dialogue and create a foundation for cooperation in topical areas, BelTA reports.
The regular meeting of the CIS Railway Transport Council is held in Minsk on 20-21 May. The agenda of the meeting includes 12 issues regarding the coordination of efforts of CIS railways in the international transportation of passengers and cargos, the joint use of freight cars and containers, mutual payments for transportation and other services, harmonization of the legal framework. Plans have also been made to hold bilateral meetings of heads of railway administrations.
