Commodity turnover between Kazakhstan and China reached a historic high of USD 41 bln in 2023, President

On the eve of the visit of President of China Xi Jinping to Kazakhstan, Head of State Kassym-Jomart Tokayev gave a written interview to Xinhua Agency, Kazinform News Agency reports. 

The Head of State said mutual high-level visits prove close political dialogue between the two countries. Last year the countries achieved several important agreements, including the introduction of a visa-free regime, construction of the third railway checkpoint, mutual establishment of cultural centers, declaration of 2024 Kazakhstan Tourism Year in China, opening of Lu Ban’s workshop and branches of China’s top universities in Kazakhstan.

China steadily maintains its position as Kazakhstan's top trading and investment partner. For more than 30 years of bilateral relations, the commodity turnover between the countries grew by 100 times to reach a historic high of 41 billion US dollars in 2023.

In 2023 China ranked among Kazakhstan's top four largest foreign investors with some 2 billion US dollars in direct investments in 2023 which is 16.4% more compared to 2022. The total amount of China’s investments in the Kazakhstani economy surpassed 25 billion US dollars.

The President said currently some 4,700 Kazakhstan-China companies work in Kazakhstan. Besides, the countries are keen to boost financial cooperation using opportunities provided by the Astana International Financial Center (AIFC). Nearly 2,800 companies from 78 countries are registered at the AIFC with the tenth accounting for China.

The countries also established cooperation within international structures such as the UN, SCO, CICA, Central Asia-China, etc. The President said the countries have similar positions on many pressing issues of the global and regional agendas.

Kassym-Jomart Tokayev stated that Kazakhstan fully supports the One Road, One Belt China’s megaproject and is ready to further take an active part in further synergy of the national strategies.
