ALMATY. KAZINFORM - Almaty akim (mayor) Akhmetzhan Yessimov has inspected the progress of construction of sports facilities ahead of the 2017 Winter Universiade in the city.

He paid a visit to the construction site of the Almaty village for 5,000 athletes and an ice arena with a 12,000 all-seated capacity. "After the end of the Winter Universiade, all sports facilities can serve as the venues for mass sports and cultural events. They all have huge potential in that respect," mayor Yessimov noted. He especially stressed that all facilities should meet the international standards, in particular, the ones of FISU and the International Olympic Committee (IOC). In conclusion, Mr. Yessimov expressed hope that the new sports facilities will help Almaty win its bid to host the 2012 Winter Olympic Games.
