Corruption scandal: Arrest for Vice Defense Minister of Kazakhstan extended

ASTANA. KAZINFORM - A court in Kazakhstan has extended the arrest of Vice Defense Minister of the country Bagdat Maikeyev suspected of a multimillion bribe until April, the court's press service reports.

"Chairman of the military court of the Akmola region garrison Mr. Daulet Moldabayev extended the arrest of Bagdat Maikeyev until April 9, 2014," the press service of the country confirms.

As reported earlier, general Bagdat Maikeyev was detained in a posh Astana neighborhood on February 9. The detainee is suspected of accepting at least $2 million in bribes from unnamed businessmen who wanted to win one of the defense ministry's tenders. Right after the arrest the court ordered Maikeyev into pretrial detention until February 20 on charges of bribery. He may face up to 10-15 years in prison for alleged graft.
