CSTO holds consultations on disarmament, arms control
It was attended by the heads of relevant units in the Foreign Ministries and other departments of Belarus, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia and Tajikistan, BelTA learnt from CSTO spokesman Vladimir Zainetdinov.
"The meeting participants had a constructive exchange of views on cooperation between the CSTO member states in the implementation of the decisions of the 2010 Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) and on the coordination of their participation in the next review cycle of the treaty, and also the issues of the treaty on nuclear-weapon-free zone in Central Asia signed in Semipalatinsk on 8 September 2006," said Vladimir Zainetdinov.
The meeting also discussed the CSTO member states' positions in multilateral disarmament organizations related to the Convention on Inhumane Weapons and Biological and Toxin Weapons Convention.
The consultations heard out the Russian initiative on the 1925 Geneva Protocol that prohibits the use in war of asphyxiating, poisonous, or other gases, and bacteriological methods of warfare, in the context of the Chemical Weapons Convention, BelTA informs.
"The meeting participants noted the usefulness of active participation of the CSTO in international efforts on arms control and on strengthening the strategic stability. The meeting recognized the need to promote closer cooperation among the CSTO member states in this area, and to improve the efficiency of their cooperation in international disarmament organizations," said Vladimir Zainetdinov.
