KARAGANDA. KAZINFORM - A dam in Jumabek village, Abai district, Karaganda region, was broken due to overflow of Kokozek Lake.

As a result, sediment-laden water was sent to the village where it has destroyed a number of houses. Kazinform's correspondent reported from the scene. According to his words, blocks of ice broke off the dam. 42 citizens of the village have been evacuated. In addition, for security purposes rescuers evacuated all residents of the nearby village of New Buhar-Zhyrau district (about 500 people). Governor of Kurminskiy rural district Zhanat Zhumadil informed that 17 houses have been flooded. One semi-detached cob house was destroyed. In addition, walls of several houses and outbuildings collapsed. Special commission has been established to examine the houses and assess the damage. He explained that the dam which was built in 1956 is now in a private ownership. Previously, it belonged to Kurminskiy poultry farm, in the 90s it was bought by a sole proprietorship. Deputy Governor of Karaganda region Andrei Lyapunov noted that the water gushing from the river Sokurov has flooded road leading to Karaganda airport "Saryarka". Vehicular traffic on this site is closed. According to the Committee of Emergency Situations under the Ministry of Interior, 93 houses flooded in Abai district. Total there were evacuated 60 people, including 20 children.
