Death toll from flash-floods in Philippines rises to 51

MANILA. January 17. KAZINFORM The death toll from the recent flash-floods and landslides in the central and southern Philippines rose to 51, with recent fatalities in the central Philippine province of Negros Oriental, officials said Monday; Kazinform refers to Xinhua.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council ( NDRRMC) reported that as of Monday 6:00 a.m. local time, the heavy rains brought by the northeast monsoon and the tailend of a cold front, displaced 1.5 million people in central and southern regions of the country. Twelve people remained missing, while eight were wounded. The NDRRMC said 549,852 people are now in evacuation centers nationwide.

It has caused damage to about 1.62 million pesos (36.65 million U.S. dollars) worth of crops, infrastructure and property. Several roads in the provinces of Samar, Leyte and Surigao del Sur are impassable; Kazinform cites Xinhua.
