Defense ministries of Kazakhstan and Russia should have very close ties - Nazarbayev

ASTANA. January 30. KAZINFORM Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev has received Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu on Wednesday, the Presidential press service said.

During the meeting, President Nursultan Nazarbayev emphasized the importance of strengthening cooperation between Kazakhstan and Russia in many areas, including military and military-technical one.

"Russia has been and will be one of the most important strategic partners of our country, and this fact, I believe, serves the interests of the two states. Defense ministries of our countries should have very close ties to interact within the CSTO, military-technical sector, as well as in other important areas of cooperation. During the last meeting with the President of the Russian Federation, we have agreed to continue to work in these areas," the President of Kazakhstan noted.

Sergey Shoigu said that a wide range of issues relating to the prospects of the CSTO, military-technical cooperation, and the development of training and education programs has been discussed during his visit to Kazakhstan.

"The most important thing is the completion of the six-year work on the signing of a joint air defense project. We believe it is crucial for today, and in the future we will have to do a lot to form a common air defense space. We have always been and remain to be strategic partners, neighbors. Presidents of our countries have set serious tasks to improve all defense and security systems of our countries. At the meeting with the President of Kazakhstan, we have got the full support of our future plans for cooperation," the Russian Minister of Defense stated.

The sides also discussed the tasks for increasing the level of border security of the two states and the regional and global security.

To date, Russia and Kazakhstan have signed more than 60 papers on various areas of military and military-technical cooperation.
