DINMUKHAMED AKHMETOVICH KUNAYEV (1912-1993) – an outstanding state and public figure, three times Hero of Socialist Labor, Doctor of Engineering Science, academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic.

He was born in Verniy (Almaty). He graduated from the Moscow Nonferrous Metallurgy Institute. In 1936-1942 Dinmukhamed held executive posts in the Altai, Ridder and Leninogorsk mines. In 1942-1952 he held the post of deputy Chairman of the Council of People's Commissars of the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic, Ministers Council of the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic. In April, 1952 he was elected as a President of the Kazakhstan Academy of Sciences. In 1955-1960, 1962-1964 he was a Chairman of the Ministries Council of the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic. For 25 years out of 45 years, during which he held executive posts, D.Kunayev was the first leader of the republic. He made a great contribution to social-economic and cultural development of Kazakhstan. Mining production reached a high level, new production regions formed, new cities and regional population centers built. During his leadership many industrial enterprises started working, the Mangystau oil minefields and railways construction were developed, mining and production of titanium, magnesium, synthetic rubber started, various branches of electrical engineering, engineering, chemistry dynamically developed. Mangystau, Zhezkazgan and Torgay oblasts formed. He paid special attention to the Kerbulak plain development, Kapchagay Reservoir construction. Intensive development of military-industrial complex in the USSR reflected in Kazakhstan?s economy. D.Kunayev supported famous people of science, literature, art and intelligentsia. He took measures on maintenance of the republic?s territorial boundaries and its integrity. From 1985 M.S.Gorbachev has reformed modern political and economic systems. On December 16, 1986 representative of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union G.Razumovsky announced decision of the Political Bureau to relieve D.Kunayev of the post and to appoint G.Kolbin the First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Kazakhstan at a special plenary session of the Kazakh Central Committee of the Communist Party. Kolbin?s appointment gave rise to national dissatisfaction, which caused December 1986 events. The Central leadership accused D.Kunayev of that meeting organization. On June 26, 1987 D.Kunayev was excluded from the group of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. He is an author of many scientific works dedicated to problems of social and communist construction and etc. D.Kunayev was awarded with eight Orders of Lenin, orders and medals.
