Dozens of dead seals spotted washing ashore of Caspian Sea in Mangistau

Carcasses of endangered Caspian seals were found washed up on the shore of the Caspian Sea in Mangistau region, Kazinform News Agency correspondent reports.

According to the region’s fish inspectorate department officials, a special monitoring group are on their way to Tupkaraganskiy district.

Andrei Rudskiy, acting head of the department, said that 40 carcasses of seals were washed up on the shore overnight. The work is ongoing to take samples of the dead animals by the Tupkaraganskiy district fish inspectorate officials and the working group of the regional administration.

The commission made up of the fish inspectorate officials arrived on the scene. They also include the ecology department experts. Dead seals were washed up on the shore by northwestern wind surges. In many cases, seals die in the sea… Deaths among seals are mostly caused by rise in the air temperature and water, said Rudskiy.

To note, the country added the Caspian seals to its book of endangered species in 2020.

Mass deaths of swans were recorded in Mangistau region late last year.
