Dynamic and diverse: Almaty offers something different, Italian magazine says
Renowned Italian magazine Condé Nast Traveller recently recognized Almaty, Kazakhstan, as a special place combining modern vitality, rich culture, and natural beauty. Kazinform News Agency correspondent shares the list of the recommendations by the magazine.
Describing the city, the publication noted, “Almaty, the former capital and Silk Route stop, is a thriving cultural hub and the gateway to some of the republic’s most remarkable scenery. Dynamic and diverse, Almaty offers travellers something a bit different. From Soviet speed-skating, horse riding and mountain hiking, these are the top things to do.”
Among the particularly helpful suggestions are the stunning sceneries. Authors advised seeing the Charyn Canyon with its "Martian-style" red rock formations, the mystical Kaindy Lake with its submerged forest, and the magnificent Ile-Alatau mountains. Nature lovers also should visit the calm Kolsai Lakes and the singing dunes in Altyn-Emel National Park.
For the author, Almaty's culinary experience was equally memorable. The Zelionyj Bazaar is an epicenter of traditional Kazakh flavors and modern eateries like Sandyq and Qaimaq were recommended in the article. But special attention was paid to the baursak, saying “These deep-fried golden puffs are irresistible, a kind of doughnut that’s pulled apart and served sweet, savoury or simply as it is.”
Among the city attractions are Medeu, the highest skating rink in the world, tucked away in the Medeu Valley, and Panfilov Park, a busy green area featuring Zenkov's Cathedral. The article highlights that “the city is spectacularly tree-lined — its name derives from Alma-ata, meaning ‘city of apples’ – and its parks are bustling, busy, sunlit spaces.”
The publication also emphasized Almaty's vibrant arts scene, expanding wine culture, and energetic nightlife, therefore rendering it a multifarious location appealing to all kinds of tourists.
