E Kazakhstan eyes construction of new river port
If built, the multimodal transit corridor would connect Russia and China through the territory of Kazakhstan, Kazinform News Agency correspondent reports.
A trilateral meeting between the transport ministers of China, Kazakhstan and Russia is set to take place next May. Under the project, it’s expected to launch the fourth railway checkpoint at border with China, build 120km of railway to Turgyl settlement and construct a river port there, said Marat Karabayev, Kazakh transport minister, during a government hour in the Majilis.
According to him, the multimodal transit corridor would connect Russia and China through the territory of Kazakhstan, providing access to the North Sea via Irtysh and Ob Rivers. The expected volume of transit is 2.5 million tons per year.
Earlier, Kazakh Premier Olzhas Bektenov revealed the plans to bring the volume of transit transportation to 45mln tons during the meeting of the Eurasian Intergovernmental Council in Moscow, Russia.
