The resignation is being welcomed by protesters and will be discussed in a session of the judicial council. Earlier, hundreds of public prosecutors staged a sit-in outside his office in Cairo, demanding he resign.

They said that his appointment by the president was improper, arguing that the Supreme Judicial Council should have been the one to nominate him, in order to ensure a separation of powers. They also maintain that President Morsi's decision to sack the former prosecutor was an assault to the judiciary's independence. The former public prosecutor, Abdel Ma-guid Mahmoud, had served for many years under former President Hosni Mubarak .
