Energy field - driver of Kazakh-Canadian cooperation

Perspectives of bilateral cooperation development in trade, economic and investment spheres, including oil and gas field and uranium branch were discussed at the meeting.

Kazakhstan is the main trade partner of Canada among countries of CIS, East and Central Europe, and Canada is a leading Kazakhstan's partner among states of America. Mutual trade turnover had amounted USD 3.3 billion in 2012.

The Agreement was signed between "Kazatomprom" JSC and "Cameco Corporation" in September 2012, in London, deducing the Kazakh-Canadian cooperation in the field of uranium to a new level, which allows developing partnerships for further refining production and conversion of uranium ore for the production of fuel for nuclear power plants.

In this regard, the parties emphasized the importance of early signing of the bilateral agreement on cooperation in the peaceful use of nuclear energy, which is in the final stage of approval.

The sides also exchanged views on topical issues in the energy sector in Kazakhstan and Canada, the prospects for bilateral cooperation in areas such as exploration and production of unconventional resources (shale gas and oil). The Kazakh Diplomat briefed the achievements of our country in the socio-economic sphere, the main priorities of the strategic project of President Nursultan Nazarbayev "Kazakhstan-2050" and the preparation for the "Expo-2017" in Astana.

At the end of the conversation K.Zhigalov invited the Minister of Natural Resources CanadaJoe Oliver to visit Kazakhstan this year.
