EU committed to strengthening ties with Kazakhstan, Trade Policy Review states
Ambassador João Aguiar Machado delivered a statement on behalf of the European Union at the Trade Policy Review of the Republic of Kazakhstan, highlighting the country's economic resilience and its active engagement as a member of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Kazinform News Agency correspondent reports.
“During the period under review, we have witnessed major challenges. Kazakhstan has shown economic resilience in the face of these challenges and proved to be an engaged WTO member,” stated Ambassador Machado.
He emphasized the strong relationship between the EU and Kazakhstan, noting their shared commitment to the WTO and the multilateral trading system.
“The EU fully encourages and supports Kazakhstan’s reform path to a more democratic model of governance and the promotion and protection of human rights. These are not only the foundations for a functioning democracy but are essential to attract foreign investment.”
Ambassador Machado further emphasized the strength of trade relations between the EU and Kazakhstan, adding that the EU remains Kazakhstan’s top trading partner and largest provider of services and foreign investment.
“Our comprehensive Enhanced Partnership and Cooperation Agreement (EPCA) forms a solid foundation for taking our bilateral relations further,” he remarked.
He also acknowledged Kazakhstan’s domestic efforts to diversify its economy, which he said is crucial for the country's long-term economic resilience. Additionally, he expressed approval of Kazakhstan’s growing commitment to environmental sustainability.
“The recently signed Memorandum of Understanding on Strategic Partnerships for Sustainable Raw Materials, Batteries, and Renewable Hydrogen between the EU and Kazakhstan is a testament to our shared vision for a greener future,” he noted.
However, the EU raised concerns regarding recent public procurement measures introduced by Kazakhstan that favor domestic suppliers over foreign ones. The EU emphasized the importance of non-discriminatory practices in line with Kazakhstan’s commitments under the EPCA. It also expressed concerns about the agricultural sector, particularly the registration process for foreign establishments exporting animal products and support policies for agricultural machinery that favor domestic products.
“The EU remains committed to working closely with Kazakhstan to address these concerns and to continue fostering a strong, mutually beneficial trade relationship based on shared principles of openness, fairness, and sustainability," Ambassador Machado concluded.
