This time the special “Explainer” section is dedicated to the Aral Sea tragedy. Once a thriving body of water spanning the Central Asian countries is witnessing an alarming decline. According to the ambassador of the International Caspian-Aral Basin Ecosystem Revival and Flood Mitigation Jan Kavan, the Aral Sea can not only be saved, but returned back to its original size. In an interview to the “New Time” reporter Balzhan Samigullina Mr. Kavan explained that it is possible thanks to the projects, focused on constructing new channels for the Esil and Irtysh rivers, with first stages of completion expected by 2026. According to a president of the UN General Assembly’s 57th Session, these projects aim not only to save the ecosystem but also have the potential to generate up to 3,5 thousand jobs and alleviate poverty in the Aral area.
Last week, the world celebrated the International Volunteer Day. With over three thousand registered volunteer organizations, Kazakhstan also joined the celebration. Balzhan Samigullina met with Vera Kim, an MP and a chairperson of National Volunteer Network to hear her heartwarming story.
