EU: Kyrgyz presidential elections - an important milestone towards democratic stabilization
USSELS. November 1. KAZINFORM /Dimash Syzdykov/ Presidential elections in Kyrgyzstan constitute an important milestone towards the democratic stabilization of the country, say Catherine Ashton, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Štefan Füle, European Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighbourhood Policy in their joint statement.
"We welcome the peaceful conduct of the presidential elections in Kyrgyzstan. However, some important shortcomings in the electoral legislation, particularly with regard to voter lists, vote counting and tabulating results, need to be addressed," the statement reads.
The EU officials stressed that the past elections were the final step in the process of transition from the provisional institutions established amid crisis to legitimate public authorities.
It was noted that the EU is ready to assist Kyrgyzstan in conducting important reforms, in particular ensuring respect for the rule of law, human rights and democratic principles, maintaining public order, fostering reconciliation between communities and promoting economic recovery.
