Factcheck.kz has become the first Kazakh partner in Meta’s global fact-checking program
Meta Corporation has included Kazakhstan’s Factcheck.kz project in its third-party fact-checking program, which aims to identify viral disinformation on Facebook, Instagram, and Threads, reports a Kazinform News Agency correspondent, citing factcheck.kz.
The third-party fact-checking program has been active since 2016. Since its launch, over 100 independent organizations worldwide, certified by the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN), have become participants. These organizations work in over 60 languages. Fact-checkers involved in the program independently identify disinformation content and evaluate it as false, partially false, or altered.
As part of its ongoing fight against disinformation, Meta collaborates with independent third-party fact-checkers globally, who verify and assess the accuracy of content. When a fact-checker evaluates a piece of content as false, partially false, or altered, Meta reduces its visibility in the news feed. This helps prevent the spread of disinformation and reduces the number of people who see it. Pages, groups, and accounts that repeatedly share false content may also experience reduced reach, and their ability to monetize or advertise can be limited. When a post is marked as false, Meta notifies people who see it or attempt to share it.
It’s important to note that fact-checkers are not responsible for removing content or blocking accounts on Meta platforms. Fact-checkers focus on reviewing and evaluating viral disinformation on Facebook, Instagram, and Threads. The content review and policy enforcement processes at Meta are separate from the independent third-party fact-checking program.
“Our work to limit disinformation on Meta platforms continues, and today we are pleased that Factcheck.kz has joined Meta’s third-party fact-checking program for Kazakhstan. The work of Factcheck.kz will support our ongoing efforts to provide users with reliable information on Meta platforms,” said Nicole Han, Meta’s Strategic Partnerships Development Manager, commenting on the partnership between Factcheck.kz and Meta.
Factcheck.kz is a project of the MediaNet International Center for Journalism and has been operating since 2017, becoming the first professional fact-checking resource in Central Asia. Since 2018, Factcheck.kz has been a certified member of the IFCN, which brings together the world’s leading fact-checkers.
