Four lives saved: Multi-organ transplant successfully conducted in Kazakhstan
In the East Kazakhstan Regional Hospital, an effective organ transplant operation was performed on four patients from a deceased donor. The organs of a 39-year-old man were donated by his relatives after he was diagnosed with brain death, thereby saving the lives of four people, Kazinform News Agency reports.
"A heart was transplanted to a man born in 1977, lungs to a woman born in 1962, a kidney to a child born in 2015, and another kidney to a woman born in 1966, thus saving the lives of four citizens of the country," the Ministry of Health reported.
For patients waiting for lungs or a heart, this is the only chance for salvation. According to the Ministry: "Patients have gained a chance for a "second life" thanks to the well-coordinated team of republican, regional and inpatient transplant coordinators of the Republican Center for Transplant Coordination of the Ministry of Health and specialists from the transplant centers of the KF "University Medical Center", TOO "National Scientific Oncology Center."
According to the Republican Center for Transplant Coordination, 7 posthumous donors were registered in Kazakhstan in 2023, which allowed for the transplantation of 19 organs. In October 2024, 23 transplants were implemented, which was made possible by the registration of six posthumous donors. At present, the center is anticipating the transplantation of 4,080 patients who require kidney, liver, heart, and heart-lung transplants.
