Gas explosion rocks former mosque in Akmola region: 3 killed, 16 injured
A gas explosion occurred in the village of Sabyndy in Korgalzhyn district, resulting in the deaths of three people, Kazinform News Agency has learnt from the press service of the Department of Emergency Situations of the Akmola region.
“In the building that formerly housed the village mosque in Sabyndy village, Korgalzhyn district, a gas-air mixture exploded resulting in the collapse of the building. Bodies of a man born in 1978, a woman born in 1983, and a child born in 2012 were found in the rubble,” the department stated.
A total of 16 people got injured and were taken to the Astana city hospital.
The rescue team removed six gas cylinders out of seven from the scene.
“Debris removal is currently underway. Approximately 30 members of the Emergency Situations Department of the region are working alongside the operational rescue squad, a team of psychologists and paramedics as well as the capital's canine service at the scene of the accident,” the department added.
The cause of the explosion is set to be determined.
In addition, an operational headquarters has been established and a dedicated hotline telephone number (8-7162-52-09-50) is now in service.
