However, this technological shift has highlighted significant disparities in how news organizations adopt and utilize AI.

Recent analysis by the Brookings Institution notes that the rise of generative AI systems like ChatGPT is revolutionizing journalism by assisting with tasks such as content creation, text summarization, and platform-specific customization. However, this technological shift comes with significant challenges, including the need for meticulous vetting to ensure accuracy, ethical concerns surrounding autonomy and bias, and potential impacts on human labor.

While large media outlets are increasingly adopting AI solutions, many smaller and independent organizations lack the resources to do so effectively. Some content creators are unable to use these tools—despite their interest—due to a lack of expertise. This gap creates an uneven playing field, with underrepresented communities facing a higher risk of exclusion from AI-driven media narratives.

Diverse teams bring a variety of perspectives and lived experiences that help shape balanced, comprehensive reporting. With AI tools being used to analyze vast amounts of data, identify trends, and craft stories, the absence of diverse viewpoints risks perpetuating stereotypes or reinforcing biases inherent in datasets. A newsroom with a broad range of voices can challenge these issues and ensure technology is used responsibly and inclusively.

AI's limitations in multilingual translation hinder its effectiveness for journalists, content creators, and consumers, as large language models are primarily designed for English-speaking audiences, leading to challenges in accurately translating interviews and conveying messages across languages.

Additionally, the growing reliance on AI infrastructure provided by major tech companies like Google, Meta, Microsoft, and Amazon raises fears of newsroom dependency and "platformization," where these corporations wield outsized influence over media operations and data use.

The opaque nature of generative AI and its concentration within a few powerful companies amplifies worries about how corporate interests could shape editorial content and threaten the sustainability of independent journalism.
