Gennady Golovkin appointed Chair of new Olympic Commission by World Boxing

President of Kazakhstan’s National Olympic Committee Gennady Golovkin has been appointed the Chair of the World Boxing Federation’s new Olympic Committee, Kazinform News Agency learned from Olympic.kz.

In this position, Golovkin will be responsible for interaction with international sports organizations to ensure transparency of World Boxing activities. He will also assume responsibility for close cooperation with the International Olympic Committee to preserve boxing in the Olympic Games program and recognition of World Boxing in the IOC.

“For me personally, as well as for the entire Kazakhstan and the sports world, it is important to preserve boxing as an Olympic sport, and this will be top priority of my work. I also plan to work closely with the International Olympic Committee on issues of boxing's commitment to the Olympic values ​​of honesty, fairness and transparency,” Golovkin says on his appointment.

He expressed confidence that his experience as a professional athlete would help to build systemic work within World Boxing. “Through joint efforts we will be able to give new impetus to the development of boxing, but we still have a lot to do ahead,” he stressed.

World Boxing President Boris van der Vorst added: “As someone that had a hugely successful career in both Olympic-style and professional boxing, Gennady has a deep knowledge of the sport and completely understands why continuing to be part of the Olympic Movement is so vital to the ongoing success of boxing at every level, from the grassroots to the professional ranks.”

“Gennady will be a huge asset to our organization and I look forward to working closely with him in delivering our mission to ensure boxing remains at the heart of the Olympic Movement,” he emphasized.

Golovkin’s candidacy was one of the first to be approved by World Boxing. Other members of the Commission will be announced soon.

World Boxing is the International Boxing Federation established in April 2023. Currently it unites national federations from 44 countries of the world.

In February 2024, Gennady Golovkin was elected the President of Kazakhstan’s National Olympic Committee.

Later, in May, he was appointed a member of Olympism 365 Commission of the International Olympic Committee.
