“Goodbye, America. It was nice knowing you”: Celebrities threaten to leave as Trump secures second term
Following Donald Trump’s recent election win, a wave of celebrity reactions surfaced, with many expressing disappointment and even plans to leave the U.S. Trump’s Electoral College victory of 295 to 226, alongside over 72 million popular votes, has sparked a range of responses from Hollywood’s biggest names, Kazinform News Agency reports.
Among the list is actress Sharon Stone, who said she’s contemplating a move to Italy. “I think that’s an intelligent construct at this time," she shared in an interview, referring to the current political climate. "This is one of the first times in my life that I’ve actually seen anyone running for office on a platform of hate and oppression.”
Pop icon Cher, also disillusioned, admitted that Trump's previous term left her almost physically ill. “I almost got an ulcer the last time. If he gets in, who knows? This time I will leave [the country],” she stated in an interview with the Guardian.
Other stars, including “Game of Thrones” actress Sophie Turner, threatened to leave the U.S. altogether. “I’ll get the f–k out," she said, planning to return to her native United Kingdom. Billie Eilish and Ariana Grande, meanwhile, took to social media, with Eilish describing the results as a “war on women” and Grande expressing sympathy for those grieving over the election results.
Late-night host Jimmy Kimmel didn’t stay away either, calling it “a terrible night for women, for children, for the hundreds of thousands of hardworking immigrants who make this country great.”
Rapper Cardi B also expressed frustration, telling Trump supporters to “leave me the f–k alone”.
Adding to the wave of celebrity reactions, Ugly Betty and Barbie star America Ferrera is reportedly considering a move to the UK with her husband and children. According to a close source, Ferrera was left “devastated” by Vice President Harris's loss, feeling that her faith in the country had been profoundly shaken. “She thought the country she lived in was better than that,” the source revealed.
Actress Christina Applegate also expressed her frustration openly on social media, taking a firm stand against followers who opposed rights for women and those with disabilities. “Please unfollow me if you voted against female rights. Against disability rights,” she wrote. Adding that she was so disillusioned she planned to shut down a long-running fan account, she concluded with, “What you did is unreal...this is sick.”
Barbara Streisand hinted at leaving the U.S. herself, telling host Stephen Colbert that she would find it hard to remain in the country under another Trump administration. Streisand shared that she would “most likely relocate to England” if Trump returned to office.
Meanwhile, author Stephen King took to social media with a poignant analogy. “There’s a sign you can see in many shops that sell beautiful but fragile items,” he wrote, referencing a common saying about democracy, “LOVELY TO LOOK AT, DELIGHTFUL TO HOLD, BUT ONCE YOU BREAK IT, THEN IT’S SOLD.”
The View co-hosts Whoopi Goldberg and Sunny Hostin also voiced their disappointment. Goldberg reiterated her refusal to use his name, while Hostin described herself as “profoundly disturbed” by the election outcome. British author Philip Pullman kept his message simple yet impactful, writing, “Goodbye, America. It was nice knowing you.”
Trump, on the other hand, following his win, called the result “the greatest political movement of all time” and pledged to “help the country heal.”
