Heavy downpours of up to 103.5 mm per hour hit parts of South Korea

Heavy rainfall of up to 103.5 millimeters per hour pounded parts of the South Jeolla Province overnight, with the downpours expected to continue until the following day for the central regions, the state weather agency said Tuesday, Yonhap reports.

As of 8 a.m., a heavy rain advisory had been issued across parts of South Jeolla Province and South Gyeongsang Province, and 10 mm of rain per hour had been pouring across South Jeolla provinces, according to the Korea Meteorological Administration.

In the county of Jindo, up to 103.5 mm of rain was recorded per hour from around 1 a.m., and up to 85.5 mm per hour in Goheung county from around 3 a.m., according to automatic weather station measurements.

No human causalities have been reported so far, authorities said, although 57 residents evacuated temporarily in case of safety hazards.

The rain will continue until Wednesday for the central regions, but it will come to a lull by daytime on Jeju Island and by nighttime in the southern regions.

The precipitation rate is expected to record 30 to 80 mm for much of the country by Wednesday, including in the greater Seoul area and across the Jeolla provinces, up to 60 mm in North Chungcheong Province and Ulsan, and 10 to 60 mm on the southern resort island of Jeju.

A heavy downpour of around 30 mm per hour is expected later Tuesday throughout the night in the capital area, the islands and mountainous region of Gangwon Province, South Chungcheong Province, and about 20 mm in the northern part of North Chungcheong Province.
