Heavy snowstorm, gusting wind paralyze Kazakh capital
A winter storm has been battering the capital of Kazakhstan for several days. The city turned out to be gripped by the natural disaster, despite the round-the-clock operation of the utility services, Kazinform News Agency reports.
More than 2,700 workers and over 1,600 units of specialized vehicles have been involved in snow removal since the morning of January 21.
31,000 cubic meters of snow were removed from Astana since night.
The priority is to remove snow from central streets, public transport routes, bus stops and sidewalks. However, the amount of precipitation and strong winds complicate this work
The snowstorm caused traffic chaos on city roads on the evening of January 21.
Flights were delayed at Astana Airport due to harsh weather, which will last until 11:00 am, January 22: gusts of wind reaching 22 meters per second, daytime temperatures at -2°C and nighttime temperatures at -18°C, and visibility limited to 500 meters at night.
Passengers are asked to monitor the latest information on the airport website or call the contact center at 8 (7172) 702-999.
Rescuers strongly recommend to refrain from travel outside the city.
