HK detects new case of antibiotic resistant bacteria
The boy fell ill in mid-April and was admitted to a hospital in Dongguan, China, Xinhua reports.
The young patient has since been admitted to Tuen Mun Hospital of Hong Kong and tested positive for NDM Carbapenemase producing Enterobacteriaceae. He is now in stable condition and his home contacts have no symptoms.
NDM is an enzyme which can inactivate carbapenems and other beta-lactams such as penicillins. Bacteria harboring this NDM gene are commonly resistant to multiple antimicrobials, limiting therapeutic options and rendering severe clinical infections difficult to treat.
The disease was first reported in a Swedish patient of Indian origin who traveled to New Delhi, India, in 2008.
It is the seventh case of the disease in Hong Kong.
