How many asylum seekers and refugees are there in Kazakhstan
As of September 1, 2024, there were 368 asylum seekers and 310 refugees in Kazakhstan, Deputy Chairman of the Migration Committee of the Labor Ministry of Kazakhstan Yerbolat Abulkhatin said during a briefing, Kazinform News Agency correspondent reports.
Out of the total number of asylum seekers, 175 are from Ukraine, 136 from Afghanistan, 19 from Russia and 39 from other countries. 213 refugees arrived from Afghanistan, 87 from Ukraine, five from China, three from Syria and one from Uzbekistan. Most asylum seekers and refugees are residing in Almaty, said Abulkhatin.
He went on to note that in order to promote and expand cooperation the Labor Ministry and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees signed a memorandum of mutual understanding.
To note, by the governmental order as of August 7, 2024, changes were introduced to the rules for assignment, prolongation, deprivation and the termination of the status of the refugee.
Earlier, the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection of Population of Kazakhstan amended the rules for registration and examination of an application to assign the status of the refugee.
