How Przewalski's horses overwinter in Turgay steppes in Kostanay region
The Przewalski's horses are not afraid of cold and snow and are doing well on their native land, a Kazinform correspondent reports.
Compared to the autumn period, the horses put on weight and their fur became thicker. Rustam Bidibayev, a representative of Kostanay region’s territorial forestry and wildlife inspectorate, says that the animals feel excellent.
“The depth of snow-cover in Turgay is some 70 centimeters now. The horses are getting their food, but the caretakers are constantly laying out hay. After all, our horses are from a zoo, not from the wild. They are watched around the clock by caretakers who live in a house and work on a rotational basis. Kerkulans are not left without attention,” Rustam Bidibayev emphasized.
“As for the animals’ pregnancy, it will be clear by spring, or even by summer. Now it is impossible to say when foals will be born, based on the weight and appearance of the horses, which look well-fed,” he added.
