The date was chosen to honor the United Nations General Assembly's adoption and proclamation, on 10 December 1948, of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), the first global enunciation of human rights.

On the occasion of the International Human Rights Day, Center SAD in cooperation with the Astana branch of the Kazakhstan International Human Rights Bureau delivered a series of workshops to raise awareness of school and university students, teachers and parents on human rights. The project was supported by the Embassy of the Netherlands in Astana. At one of such workshops Ambassador Frans Potuyt gave a speech in front of law students of the Kazakh State Law University talking about the value and universality of human rights and their important role in today's international politics.

In his speech Ambassador quoted statement made by the Dutch Minister of Foreign Affairs on Human Rights Day: «Men, women and children, no matter who they are, no matter where they live, no matter what they do, have rights that can never be taken away from them. Governments around the world have an obligation to protect and promote these universal rights, but in many instances, they fail their own citizens.

Human rights defenders should know they are not alone in their struggle and that they have friends to turn to, to support them in their work. Their courageous efforts must not go unnoticed. Not on the tenth of December, or any other day,  a press release of the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Kazakhstan reads.
