IAEA Board of Governors supports Kazakhstani initiative to restore sovereign equality

At the initiative of Kazakhstan, the IAEA Board of Governors considered the issue of restoration of sovereign equality of all member States in the IAEA. This item was included in the agenda of the March session of the IAEA BoG, Kazinform News Agency cites the press service of the Kazakh MFA. 

In his speech, permanent representative of Kazakhstan Mukhtar Tileuberdi noted the special importance of resolving the problem of equal representation of the States in the decision-making bodies of the Agency and participation in the consultative process of the international organization as soon as possible. The permanent representative thanked the Chair of the “Group of Friends of Arealess Member States”, the permanent representative of Slovenia for preparing criteria and principles for the allocation of countries to regional groups, as well as conducting active negotiations with interested countries. In this regard, he called on the Member States and the IAEA Secretariat to immediately implement the provisions of the Resolution of the IAEA 67th session of the General Conference (GC(67)/RES/15), put forward by Kazakhstan in September 2023.

The heads of diplomatic missions and representatives of the USA, Russia, China, France, Great Britain, all EU countries, Canada, Uruguay, Türkiye, Brazil, South Africa and many other countries expressed strong support for the Kazakhstani initiative and noted the need to resolve the unfair situation within the IAEA as soon as possible.

Kazakhstan will continue to promote the restoration of sovereign equality in the IAEA in accordance with the UN Charter and the Statute of the Agency.
