Indian tiger population at 1,706, up 20% from 2008
NEW DELHI. March 28. KAZINFORM India's tiger population has been estimated at 1,706, up from 1,411 in 2008, according to official figures from the Tiger Census released on Monday; Kazinform refers to China Daily.
The census, carried out in the designated 39 tiger reserves across the country, has shown an increase of 295 tigers in India, a 20 percent increase in three years.
The census report was released by India's Minister of Environment and Forests, Jairam Ramesh, on Monday.
For the census, officials used cameras installed at strategic points like water bodies in the forests, as also in respective territories of the big cats and a computer analysis was done to collate the data; Kazinform cites China Daily.
